Meaning

Used to express the desire to do something.
"I want to ___."

How to Form

• Conjugates like an い-adjective.
• Can be made negative (たくない), past (たかった), or past negative (たくなかった).

Examples

• 日本に行きたいです。
  I want to go to Japan.

• 寿司を食べたくない。
  I don’t want to eat sushi.

• 子供のとき、犬を飼いたかった。
  When I was a child, I wanted to have a dog.

Notes

• The speaker’s desire is most natural.
  To talk about someone else’s desire, use:

  • 〜たがっている (used when observing others)
  • e.g. 彼は食べたがっている。

• Use を for direct objects (e.g., パンを食べたい).

• Casual and common in everyday conversations.

• Conjugates like an い-adjective.
