~すぎる Form
Meaning
Indicates that something is “too much” or “excessive” — overdone, overly intense, or excessive in degree.
How to Form
Verbs
For verbs, we use the い-stem and add "すぎる" at the end.
| Verb Type | Rule | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Ichidan (る) | い-stem (Remove る) + すぎる | 食べすぎる → Eating too much |
| Godan (う) | い-stem + すぎる | 飲みすぎる → Drinking too much |
Adjectives
| Type | Rule | Example |
|---|---|---|
| い-adjective | Remove い + すぎる | おいしすぎる → Too tasty |
| な-adjective | Drop な + すぎる | 元気すぎる → Too energetic |
For negative meaning, just negate the entire expression:
Examples
-
昨日、食べすぎた。
I ate too much yesterday. -
お酒を飲みすぎないでください。
Please don’t drink too much. -
このスープ、熱すぎる。
This soup is too hot. -
あの子は元気すぎる!
That kid has way too much energy!
Notes
- すぎる is a standalone verb meaning “to exceed.”
- Conjugates like any る-verb:
食べすぎる → 食べすぎた, 食べすぎない, etc. - Works naturally with both verbs and adjectives.
- Negative form is made after attaching すぎる.
